Strategy

In our group, when deciding on medium-term plans, annual basic policies, and priority issues related to safety, health, and the environment, the secretariat prepares drafts based on reviews of the previous year and consideration of social conditions, and a meeting of executives in charge of safety and environment. It is deliberated at the Safety and Environment Headquarters meeting and finally approved at the Safety and Environment Headquarters meeting. The results will be reported to the Management Committee.
The Board of Directors receives reports from the business execution side and supervises environmental issues, including climate change issues.

Risk management

Environmental management system

As shown in the diagram below, our group's environmental management system is operated by combining a group-wide PDCA cycle centered on the Safety and Environment Headquarters and a PDCA cycle for each business division.
The Safety and Environment Headquarters formulates a company-wide medium-term environmental plan, incorporates it into basic policies and priority issues for the year, and then formulates action plans for each division based on those policies.
Each division carries out its business activities based on its action plan, and by periodically evaluating and reviewing those activities, we identify areas for improvement and use the PDCA cycle to link them to the next year's action plan. The Safety and Environment Headquarters Secretariat also evaluates and reviews the operation of the environmental management system for the entire group every year, and any necessary improvements are shared at the Safety and Environment Headquarters meeting at the same time as business division reviews. , leading to continuous improvement. In addition, a total of 30 business departments and affiliated companies within our group have obtained ISO 14001 certification (17 in Japan and 13 overseas). (As of the end of June 2023)

Safety and environmental audit

In order to confirm and promote the activities of each department and major affiliate company, the secretariat conducts safety and environmental audits once a year * at our Refineries/Complexes. For other locations, we conduct safety and environmental audits at a frequency determined by taking into consideration the safety and environmental risks of Complex and the state of safety and environmental management. If improvements in safety and environment are found through audits, the secretariat follows up on each case from decision-making to completion of a response plan. In addition, the Safety and Environment Headquarters Chief and Deputy Heads visit the workplace every year to provide safety and environment guidance and conduct safety and environment tours.
*In fiscal 2022, audits will be conducted at 14 Complex.
