Reducing CO₂ and maintaining Satoyama through biochar production

A total of 40 people, including employees of our group companies, local residents, and members of Ichihara City's Satoyama conservation volunteer group, "Ichihara SaToYaMa Yokushi-tai," participated in the biochar production event in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture.
If dead bamboo is left to decompose, CO₂ will be generated by microorganisms, but by turning it into charcoal, the carbon can be fixed and CO₂ emissions can be reduced. This time, about 450 kg of bamboo charcoal was made from the thinned bamboo. This translates to about 800 kg of CO₂ reduction, which is equivalent to about 3.5 months of CO₂ emissions from an average household.
Thinning also allows sunlight to reach the ground's surface, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity, and is expected to have other benefits, such as promoting the growth of deep-rooted plants and reducing the risk of landslides.
Based on the Guidelines for Promoting Corporate Citizenship Activities, we will continue to encourage employee participation and leverage the strengths of our Group to continue these activities in cooperation with local communities and stakeholders.

Mangrove planting activities in Indonesia

Idemitsu Energy Indonesia was established in 2011 as a coal marketing company and currently provides local support for the Idemitsu Green Energy Pellets project. The company is engaged in a variety of corporate citizenship activities.
In 2023, we partnered with the local NGO "LindungiHutan" to participate in a project to plant 1,000 mangrove trees. Fifteen people, including expatriates, employees and their families, participated in two activities in areas undergoing development, including the artificial island of North Jakarta, and in the Tangerang area of West Jakarta.
As Indonesia continues to experience economic development, the disappearance of mangroves and coastal erosion caused by high waves are becoming more pronounced, raising concerns that this will have a detrimental effect on people's lives. In addition to preventing flooding by protecting coastal areas, this project also aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and maintain the ecosystem.
We will continue to carry out community-based activities that contribute to the conservation and restoration of the natural environment.

Culture: Initiatives to foster spiritual richness

Idemitsu Music Award

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the music program "Untitled Concert Concert," sponsored by our company, we established the "Idemitsu Music Award" in 1990. This award supports the activities of promising young and up-and-coming musicians as a way to help improve the music culture in our country. Many of the award winners have gone on to achieve remarkable success both in Japan and overseas. Our company regards "culture," which fosters spiritual richness, as one of the pillars of our corporate citizenship activities, and will continue to weave the history of the "Idemitsu Music Award" that connects people and the next generation.

Each student views environmental issues from their own perspective, takes pictures of the "〇" landscapes that they would like to preserve for the future, and the "x" landscapes that they would like to improve, and creates works of art with comments, which further brings out the potential of children and students.
