Construction of the integrated laboratory "Innovation Center" (tentative name) within the Chiba Complex ~ Strengthening internal and external coordination to establish an integrated framework from R&D to process engineering and commercial production ~

Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; representative director, president and chief executive officer: Shunichi Kito; hereinafter "Idemitsu" or the "Company") hereby announces plans to construct the "Innovative Center" (tentative name), a new integrated laboratory, within our Chiba Complex (Ichihara city, Chiba) which is home to our largest core petroleum and petrochemical manufacturing center. The Company plans to aggregate laboratories researching production technology, development technology, etc. that currently exist in multiple locations in the Innovation Center, establishing a cross-organizational R&D framework and strengthening coordination with third parties in order to establish an integrated framework from R&D to analyses, verification, process engineering, and commercial production and to accelerate technological development towards the business structure reforms set forth in the mid-term management plan. The total investment is forecasted to exceed 50 billion yen and construction is expected to be completed during fiscal year 2027.

現在、当社グループは国内に13拠点、海外に4拠点の研究所を有しています。このうち、主にGHG削減・資源循環に資する中長期的なテーマを扱うコーポレート研究部門、高付加価値の独自素材を扱う高機能材事業の研究部門を中心に、国内の研究機能の概ねをイノベーションセンターに集約します。

機能・設備面では、将来の環境変化に柔軟に対応できる可変性ラボ、研究員同士の協働・共創を促進するワンルームオフィス、世界中のパートナーと共同研究・開発が可能なオープンラボなど、部門・会社を越えて多様な人材が活発に交流できる空間や仕組みを採用します。また、国内最先端のMI^※1・DXに関しても国内外のパートナーとの連携含め先進的な取り組みを行い、研究開発のスピードアップとレベルアップを図ります。事業を横断した研究開発体制を構築するとともに社外との連携を強化し、新たな技術・事業の創出に取り組みます。

千葉事業所エリアでは現在「CNXセンター化^※2」に向け、SAF（持続可能な航空燃料）の製造・供給に向けた実証、使用済みプラスチックを原料とした油化ケミカルリサイクル、リチウム固体電解質の商業生産に向けた実証などを行っており、イノベーションセンターはこれらの分野ともシナジーを共創していきます。

当社はこれまで、石油・石油化学品の製造プロセス開発をはじめ、有機EL材料、エンジニアプラスチック、固体電解質といった高機能材料分野における独自技術の開発に取り組み、技術革新や社会実装を実現してきました。高いレベルの開発力・技術力を生かし、中期経営計画（対象年度：2023～2025年度）で掲げた2050年ビジョン「変革をカタチに」のもとで事業構造改革を進め、カーボンニュートラル・循環型社会の実現に資する新規事業を創出し社会実装を推進するためには、従来のやり方を踏襲するだけではなく進化させていく必要があります。この達成に向け、各研究所が保有する技術の強みを結集し新規事業に繋げる機能の構築、各事業および社内の技術・領域の枠を超え新規技術を獲得する活動の活性化など、研究開発における改革を進めます。イノベーションセンターの建設は、この改革の中核となる取り組みで、今後も技術・設備の面にとどまらず、人事・組織・DXなどの観点からもグループ研究開発体制を強化します。
