北米「Azimuth V Energy Evolution Fund」に出資を決定 エネルギートランジション関連事業の早期事業化を通じバリューチェーン全体のCO2排出削減に寄与します
出光興産株式会社(本社：東京都千代田区、代表取締役社長：木藤俊一、以下「当社」)は、Azimuth Capital Management（本社：カナダアルバータ州カルガリー、以下「Azimuth」）が設立するテクノロジーを活用したエネルギートランジション関連事業に特化した新ファンド「Azimuth V Energy Evolution Fund」に、2,500万米ドルを出資することを決定しました。当社はこの出資を通じ、都市ごみや天然ガスからの水素生産、低炭素燃料製造、廃プラスチックリサイクル、より効率的な地熱発電、熱水からのリチウム回収といった持続可能な社会の実現に有望な事業の早期商用化により、バリューチェーン全体でCO2排出の削減を図ります。また、Azimuthの有するビジネスモデル・市場洞察力・スタートアップとのアクセスにより、当社グループが保有する技術とスタートアップがもつアイデアのシナジーを追求し、次世代に必要とされる新規事業の創出と事業ポートフォリオの変革を目指します。
Azimuthが設立する当ファンドは、環境負荷低減を目的とするエネルギートランジションを実現するレイターステージのスタートアップに特化した、北米を拠点とする最大10億米ドルのファンドです。既存のエネルギー関連資産と商業的に利用可能な技術を組み合わせることで、一般的な再生可能エネルギー関連の事業プロジェクトを上回る収益性と炭素削減を目標としています。
当社は2021年5月に発表した「中期経営計画の見直し」において、2030年ビジョンに「責任ある変革者」を掲げました。「地球と暮らしを守る責任」を自らに任じ、カーボンニュートラル・循環型社会へのエネルギー・マテリアルトランジションを行うことで、事業ポートフォリオの収益基盤を、化石燃料・基礎化学品事業から、次世代燃料・次世代マテリアル、サーキュラービジネスに転換することを目指しています。また、自社操業に伴うCO2排出のみならず、バリューチェーン全体でのCO2排出削減にも取り組んでいきます。当社は2020年にアメリカ・サンノゼに設立した100％子会社Idemitsu Americas Holdings（President and CEO:鈴木基弘、以下「IAH」）を拠点に様々なスタートアップ企業とのネットワーキングを開始し、新規プロジェクトの探索を行っています。カーボンニュートラル及び次世代エネルギー実現に向け、商用化ステージ直前のスタートアップ発掘やビジネスモデルの検討・構築が不可欠との認識のもと、北米においてはAzimuthが最適なパートナーであると判断し、今回、当ファンドへの出資を決定いたしました。

As the energy and material transition progresses toward carbon-neutral and recycling-oriented societies, we aim to transform our business portfolio, which is based on fossil fuel and basic chemicals businesses, into one focused on next-generation fuels and materials, and circular businesses.
