Takenaka Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Takenaka Corporation") and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Idemitsu Kosan") are jointly working to Resources used construction plastics*1 (oil chemical recycling *2). We will begin a demonstration experiment.

In this demonstration experiment, Takenaka Corporation will thoroughly separate used plastics generated at construction sites in order to turn them into raw materials, and Idemitsu Kosan's subsidiary Chemical Recycle Japan, Co., Ltd. will use its oil-chemical recycling technology to produce resulting oil. Idemitsu Kosan will confirm whether this resulting oil can be used as a raw material for petrochemicals and Petroleum, and will also verify the possibility of Resources.

In the future, we aim to utilize Idemitsu Kosan's oil refining and petrochemical facilities to produce "renewable chemicals" and "renewable Petroleum" *3 using refined oil derived from used construction plastics.

Used plastics from construction sites are a mixture of a wide variety of scraps and demolition materials, and contain many plastic building materials that contain chlorine, which cannot be recycled except for some building materials. As a result, non-chlorine-containing plastics that could be recycled cannot be separated and are disposed of.
Takenaka Corporation will work with Chemical Recycle Japan, Co., Ltd. to verify which used plastics are suitable for oilification and to trial the separation of used plastics at construction sites. This will enable horizontal recycling of used construction plastics, aiming to realize a circular economy in the construction sector called "Circular Design-Build®" *5.

Through this demonstration experiment, both companies will work toward realizing a carbon-neutral and recycling-oriented society and promoting horizontal recycling of used construction plastics.

  • Used construction plastics: Waste materials generated when installing plastic building materials and plastic building materials removed when demolishing buildings.

  • Oil chemical recycling: A Resources method that converts used plastics into oil and uses the resulting oil as raw material to produce "renewable chemicals" and "renewable Petroleum." Please refer to the following release from Idemitsu Kosan.
    As of April 20, 2023
Decision to invest in commercial production facility for oil chemical recycling using used plastic as raw material

  • Renewable chemicals, renewable Petroleum: Chemicals and Petroleum produced from the oil produced through chemical recycling using used plastics as raw material.

  • Circular plastic building materials: Plastic building materials made by horizontally recycling used construction plastic building materials.

  • "Circular Design Build®": A construction method advocated by Takenaka Corporation that incorporates the concept of circular economy and eliminates waste, with the keywords of "create," "use," and "connect," instead of the traditional scrap-and-build method.
