Energy one step ahead

For the first time in Japan, INPEX and Idemitsu Kosan provide jet fuel with carbon neutrality in the supply chain to ANA - Conducting a flight with virtually zero CO2 emissions on the occasion of the G7 Hiroshima Summit -

INPEX Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Takayuki Ueda, hereinafter referred to as “INPEX”), Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Shunichi Kito, hereinafter referred to as “Idemitsu Kosan”), and All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Shinichi Inoue, hereinafter "ANA") will work to decarbonize the entire jet fuel supply chain on the occasion of the G7 Hiroshima Summit.
In this initiative, INPEX and Idemitsu Kosan will procure carbon credits *2 to neutralize the total amount of CO₂ *1 generated throughout the jet fuel supply chain, from crude oil production to consumption during flight operations. It will be supplied to ANA as neutralized jet fuel. This is Japan's first initiative to supply jet fuel to airlines with virtually zero CO₂ emissions throughout the supply chain.
In conjunction with the G7 Hiroshima Summit (summit of major countries) scheduled to be held from May 19th to 21st of this year, all flights to and from Hiroshima Airport operated by ANA during May 2023 (1st to 31st) ( (planned) to realize flights with virtually zero CO₂ emissions.

INPEX and Idemitsu Kosan will procure carbon credits to reduce the total amount of CO₂ emitted throughout the jet fuel supply chain to zero. Idemitsu Kosan supplies carbon-neutral jet fuel to ANA

    ANA achieves carbon neutral flight

In order to achieve this carbon-neutral flight, we will reduce CO₂ emissions throughout the jet fuel supply chain based on the "Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Civil Aviation" (CORSIA Scheme) established by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) *3. In response to this, we have achieved neutrality by procuring carbon credits equivalent to the same amount of emissions that have been certified under the CORSIA scheme. Furthermore, we have obtained third-party certification from Socotech Certification Japan Co., Ltd. regarding the procedure and validity of this carbon neutralization process, further increasing the reliability of this carbon neutral jet fuel supply.

The three companies will continue to consider efforts to realize carbon neutrality society even after the G7 Hiroshima Summit.

Based on the "Long-term Strategy and Medium-term Management Plan (INPEX Vision@2022)" formulated in February 2022, INPEX aims to create a more prosperous society by realizing energy development, production, and supply in a sustainable manner. We aim to become a leading energy company that is irreplaceable to society by contributing to the world's energy demand and continuing to meet the energy demand of Japan and the world. We also aim to become a leading energy company that is irreplaceable to society, and to develop an energy structure aimed at realizing a net-zero carbon society in 2050. We will actively work on reform.

  • Scope 1/2/3:
    Scope 1 (direct emissions)
Direct emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from sources of greenhouse gas emissions at organizational boundaries.
    Scope 2 (energy-derived indirect emissions)
CO₂ emissions during the generation stage of electricity and heat generated by using electricity and heat supplied by others.
    Scope 3 (other indirect emissions)
Indirect greenhouse gas emissions related to business activities in the company's supply chain, other than direct emissions and energy-derived indirect emissions.

  • Carbon credits:
Companies issue credits (emission rights) for the reduction effect (amount of reduction, amount of absorption) of greenhouse gases such as CO2 generated through forest protection, afforestation, and the introduction of energy-saving equipment, etc., and share them with other companies.
