Tokyo, Japan - INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Idemitsu) and All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) announced today they will jointly undertake the carbon neutralization of jet fuel across its entire supply chain for select flights during May 1~31, 2023, as the Group of Seven (G7) Hiroshima Summit takes place in Japan.
In this initiative, INPEX and Idemitsu will acquire carbon credits*1 to neutralize 100 percent*2 of the CO₂ generated across the jet fuel supply chain from the production of crude oil to the operation of flights, whereupon Idemitsu will supply the carbon-neutralized jet fuel to ANA. This marks the first instance in Japan where an airline is supplied with jet fuel whose CO₂ emissions are reduced to net zero across the entire supply chain.
The net zero CO₂ emissions jet fuel is expected to power all scheduled ANA flights departing from and arriving at Hiroshima Airport between May 1 and May 31, 2023, in tribute to the G7 Hiroshima Summit scheduled to take place on May 19~21, 2023.

Carbon neutral jet fuel supply sequence
-
INPEX produces equity Murban crude oil in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
-
Idemitsu procures the Murban crude oil for jet fuel refinement at a self-operated refinery
-
INPEX and Idemitsu acquire carbon credits to neutralize 100 percent of the CO₂ generated across the jet fuel supply chain. Idemitsu supplies the carbon-neutralized jet fuel to ANA
-
ANA to operate carbon neutral flights
The jet fuel deployed on the carbon neutral flights will be neutralized by the procurement of carbon credits certified by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as offsetting all the CO₂ generated across the jet fuel supply chain. CORSIA was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization*3 (ICAO). Furthermore, the procedure and completion of the carbon neutralization of the jet fuel are third-party certified by SOCOTEC Certification Japan, which enhances the credibility of the operation.

INPEX, Idemitsu and ANA will continue to study opportunities towards building a carbon neutral society after the G7 Hiroshima Summit.
Based on its long-term strategy and medium-term business plan INPEX Vision @2022 formulated in February 2022, INPEX will proactively engage in energy structure reforms towards the realization of a net zero carbon society by 2050 while aiming to be a leading energy company essential to society by helping create greater prosperity through developing, producing and supplying energy in a sustainable way and responding to the energy demands of Japan and other countries around the world.

Scopes 1/2/3:
Scope 1 (direct emissions)
Direct atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions from self-owned or operated greenhouse gas sources
Scope 2 (energy-derived indirect emissions)
CO₂ emissions from the production of energy using electricity and heat supplied by others
Scope 3 (other indirect emissions)
Indirect GHG emissions related to business activities in the supply chain other than direct emissions and energy-derived indirect emissions -
Carbon credits:
Mechanism wherein companies issue emissions credits obtained from the reduction of greenhouse gases such as CO₂ through forest conservation, reforestation and the introduction of power-saving infrastructure, and engage in the trade of credits with other companies, etc. -
ICAO:
Specialized agency that establishes international standards and regulations for aviation safety, security, efficiency, scheduled operations, and environmental conservation in the field of aviation. -
