The NYK Group's first very large crude oil tanker (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) successfully completes a biofuel test voyage - Group collaboration to help realize carbon neutrality society

For this trial voyage, Idemitsu Tanker purchased approximately 300 MT of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester B24 ^*1 biofuel blend from Idemitsu International (Asia) Pte. Ltd. (head office: Singapore; CEO: Takashi Sakata), a wholly owned subsidiary of Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd., for the Singapore-Middle East route, and bunkered in Singapore in April of this year.

Biofuel is fuel that uses biological Resources (biomass) such as animals and plants and waste edible oil as some of its raw materials, and can be used with existing ship engine infrastructure as is. Although carbon dioxide (CO₂) is generated when burned, since the CO₂ is absorbed during the growth process of the raw materials plants, the actual emissions can be considered to be zero (carbon neutral), and it is considered one of the leading candidates for next-generation fuels toward decarbonization. The bio-blended fuel used this time is expected to reduce CO₂ by about 15-20% compared to VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil), which is normally used as Very Large Crude Oil Carrier fuel.
