The "Development and deployment of ATJ demonstration equipment using cutting-edge ATJ (※1) process technology" implemented by Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Shunichi Kito; hereinafter referred to as "the Company") has been selected as one of the "Green Innovation Fund Projects/Development of Fuel Production Technology Using CO2, etc." by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization). The aim is to provide for society by building Japan's first commercial-scale SAF (※2) supply chain. The project period is five years (planned) from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2026, and the project scale is 45.7 billion yen.

Overview of projects selected by the NEDO Green Innovation Fund
In this project, we will procure bioethanol (180,000 KL per year) from both domestic and overseas sources, develop the world's first 100,000 KL-class commercial ATJ manufacturing machine, construct an SAF manufacturing device using ATJ technology at our Chiba Complex in FY2025, and start supplying it from FY2026. We also aim to achieve manufacturing costs in the 100 yen/L range, establish a quality assurance system, and ensure a stable supply of competitive SAF. Through these efforts, we aim to build Japan's first commercial-scale supply chain, including diversification of raw materials, and to provide for society as soon as possible.

In the international air transport industry, specific measures are being considered to achieve the goal set by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) of "restricting CO2 emissions from 2021 onwards to the level of 2019" as a measure against climate change. The introduction and utilization of SAF has attracted attention as one of the measures, but a commercial production system has not yet been established in Japan, and there is a growing social demand for the realization of a stable supply of domestically produced SAF.
We recognize that it is our responsibility to contribute to solving social issues while ensuring a stable supply of energy, and have set a "Your Reliable Partner for a Brighter Future" as Vision for 2030 As stated in the "Review of Medium-term Management Plan (FY2020-2022)," we will contribute to the energy transition toward carbon neutrality in the aviation sector through provide for society of SAF, an alternative aviation fuel, and will consider expanding beyond the first unit of this project to build a domestic production system with an annual capacity of 500,000 KL in 2030, toward the milestone of replacing 10% of fuel used with SAF in 2030, as already indicated by the aviation industry. Furthermore, we aim to develop our manufacturing bases and entire industrial complexes into "establishment of CNXcenter (※3)," with an eye toward expanding into the biochemical business using ethanol as a raw material.

SAF

*1
ATJ: Alcohol To Jet
The technology and process for producing SAF from ethanol has been certified as the international SAF standard ``ASTM D7566 Annex 5.''

*2
SAF: Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Jet fuel is manufactured from sustainable sources with low CO2 emissions during the process from raw material production and collection to combustion.

*3
establishment of CNXcenter
CNX stands for Carbon Neutral Transformation. This involves establishing a supply chain for ammonia, which is a CO2-free fuel, and building a circular model using waste plastic recycling technology, and converting existing manufacturing sites from conventional crude oil refining complexes into new low-carbon, Resources recycling energy hubs.
