Initiatives concerning the "Development of Mass Production Technology for Sulfide-Based Solid Electrolytes (hereinafter referred to as "the Project") implemented by Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Shunichi Kito, hereinafter referred to as "Idemitsu") have been adopted as one of the "Green Innovation Fund Projects / Development of Next-Generation Batteries and Next-Generation Motors" by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization). In the Project, Idemitsu aims to establish a mass-production technology for solid electrolytes, which are considered indispensable for the future social implementation of all-solid-state batteries. The Project period will be six years (planned) from FY2022 through FY2027.

As global warming and resource-related problems are becoming increasingly serious, it is necessary to build a carbon-neutral and recycling-oriented society. Against this backdrop, storage battery markets, especially those for large batteries such as electric vehicle (EV) batteries and stationary batteries, are expected to expand. The technologies for all-solid-state batteries are expected to be put into practical use and spread widely, which will accelerate electrification and decarbonization (promotion of EVs) and satisfy performance needs such as safety, high capacity, and rapid charging mainly in the automobile industry.

In the Project, Idemitsu aims to establish a mass-production technologies for sulfide-based solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries. Specifically, following a small-scale demonstration facility that started operating in November last year, Idemitsu will construct a large-scale pilot system for mass production at our Chiba Complex, to check and verify quality, manufacturing cost, mass-production capacity, and the like.

Through the project, Idemitsu will accelerate the establishment of mass-production technology for solid electrolyte materials, based on our own raw materials and patents for materials and manufacturing technologies, which should contribute to the early launch of the all-solid-state battery market. Moreover, to further expand the all-solid-state battery market for the realization of an electric power society, Idemitsu will expand and advance business areas beyond solid electrolytes to adjacent areas (for providing values such as the further development of next-generation battery materials and recycling).
