Lubricants Department 2 Kanto Lubricants Section 2M.YAMADA
Idemitsu Kosan began developing lubricants shortly after its founding in 1911. For over 100 years since then, the company has developed and sold lubricants that meet demand. Behind the unbroken history of lubricants are people who have passed on their technology and heart. Idemitsu Kosan's lubricants have undergone transformation as their specifications have improved over the years. We interviewed a sales representative who has opened up sales channels for lubricants since joining the company, with the theme of "connecting," about lubricant sales activities.
Joined the company in 2015, and after two years of training, was assigned to the Kanto Lubricants Section 1 in 2017. In the Kanto Lubricants Section 1, she is responsible for the Southern Kanto area and is mainly involved in grease sales. She is also responsible for truck manufacturers and ITMs*. Since 2022, she has been working as an assistant manager in the Kanto Lubricating Section 2, where she is engaged in coordinating the income and expenditure management section and being in charge of special dealers.
In addition, the northern Kanto region is in charge of area marketing.
*ITMs is an abbreviation for Idemitsu Technical Masters. A group of dealers that aims to strengthen their sales base by training salesmen who can make proposals and sales according to customer needs.

Idemitsu's lubricants continue to respond to the demands of the times and social issues
Since developing an axle oil that would not freeze even in extremely cold regions in 1919, Idemitsu Kosan (then Idemitsu Shokai) has provided various lubricants according to needs. "In recent years, lubricants that not only perform as lubricants but also have added value in line with EVs and labor-saving have become even more important. For example, the logistics industry is being asked to reform work styles due to the 2024 problem. In response to this, Idemitsu Kosan considered what lubricants could contribute, and developed a high-performance lubricant for diesel engines called "idemitsu AshFree," which was launched in 2022. By using this lubricant, soot is less likely to accumulate on diesel engine parts, reducing idling and part washing time. In addition, there is an urgent need to propose and further develop lubricants that can contribute to carbon neutrality. Therefore, we place the utmost importance on collecting real voices from the field that can lead to development during our daily sales activities and delivering them to the development staff as quickly as possible."

Lubricants are useful not only at manufacturing sites but also in daily life.
Lubricants are like the "blood" of machinery, reducing friction in various machines and helping them to operate smoothly. However, even if you were told that lubricants are indispensable in people's daily lives, few people would be able to think of uses for them other than as engine oil for automobiles. "Lubricants are used wherever things move, from production machinery on manufacturing sites to more familiar places like the bearings of fans that cool the inside of PCs. Lubricants are also used in refrigeration oil that lubricates compressors in air conditioners, and to reduce loss in vibration motors used in mobile phones and game consoles. Also, the core of a ballpoint pen contains a semi-solid lubricant called grease to prevent the ink from leaking or drying out."

Connecting communication between developers and customers
"When a customer requests a change in performance, we in sales understand their thoughts on the lubricant and the performance they are aiming for, and communicate it to the relevant parties. Then, developers use flexible thinking to create the desired performance." , they will work quickly to find a solution. There are also situations where we communicate our development ideas to the customer. We ask customers to look at the properties and physical properties of lubricants, but it is difficult for them to understand the development concept and background. What kind of design concept was the development based on, and what are the benefits for the customer? It is important to talk about in-house technical knowledge and experience and connect the feelings of both the customer and the developer. I think that's my role. Sometimes it connects people within the company. “One day, I was in charge of a project to greatly increase sales of grease, and promoted proposals and adoption to all kinds of customers, including manufacturing and transportation industries. This was only possible through the cooperation of all related people and their actions with the customer in mind. Within the lubricant division, there are people in charge of quality assurance, supply/procurement, development, logistics, etc. For example, the person in charge of procurement is responsible for ensuring the appropriate We manage the inventory of raw materials. For quality assurance, we quickly perform accurate quality inspections. My own role as a bridge to this integrated system of grease delivery was highly regarded, and together with other parties both inside and outside the company, I was able to significantly increase grease sales. Together with related parties, we were able to significantly increase sales of grease. This series of activities was selected for the Global Best Practices Presentation Conference, which will serve as a reference for overseas bases, and we were able to connect it to our achievements both domestically and internationally."
Accumulating knowledge and passing on the knowledge of our predecessors
There are times when past knowledge is put to good use in the daily workplace. "When proposing a new lubricant, we sometimes look back at materials for old products for the same purpose and are surprised to learn that it was developed several decades ago. A lubricant is not complete once it has been released; it has been improved. Since the current specifications have been reached through repeated improvements, I feel that it is important to trace the evolution.Because Idemitsu Kosan has the knowledge that we have cultivated over many years, we are able to develop new products. In addition, the information shared among employees is filled with the experiences and observations of senior employees. "We have a customer file that we have inherited from our senior employees. It summarizes the processes at the manufacturing site and the selection process for the lubricants used in each process, which can be helpful when making new proposals. Older products were sometimes kept in paper-based filings. Also, in some cases, the development history of the lubricant is recorded, and by knowing the development background at the time, we can work with customers to develop new lubricants. This is very helpful when considering.”
Respecting individual ideas and providing advice that leads to a sense of accomplishment
“I think my first assignment taught me the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes from working in sales. It was when I proposed a high-performance lubricant to a customer who had been using general-purpose products. High-performance Lubricating oil is expensive, but by changing from a general-purpose product, it will lead to a reduction in the amount used, and the client was convinced that there was a benefit in terms of total cost, so they adopted it. At that time, I realized that my suggestion had led to improvements for the customer, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. When I think about it now, my superiors, seniors, and co-workers assisted me in a way that made me think that I had come up with the answer myself. I'm grateful for that. "Nowadays, most of the people around him are his juniors, and it has come to be said that nurturing them is part of Yamada's job. “Now that I am in the position of training junior employees, I try to respect their ideas and help guide them to success, just like my former bosses and seniors. Just as I look up to the senior female salesperson I admire and admire for her active role on the front lines, and she serves as an example and encourages me, I would like to become someone who makes my junior colleagues think, 'I want to work hard because that person is working hard.'"

Lubricating oil brand message “The Heart of Technology”
The lubrication technology that Idemitsu Kosan has cultivated over many years supports technological innovation for customers, consumers, and society as a whole. The lubricant brand message "The Heart of Technology" embodies our desire to create a truly enriching world through technology. "I believe that in order to put this message into practice, it is necessary to "get things done. "Although there are people in different positions, I hope that everyone will work sincerely on their work and be focused on the results. Once I've accomplished something, there should be a "spirit-rich world" that moves people's hearts.I hope that by getting the people around me involved and seeing them accomplish something, I can move the hearts of those who follow me. I think it's great. It would be great if we could connect this kind of attitude toward work and the way we approach it. "This attitude is also connected to Management Philosophy of "Truly inspired." "When we think about Management Philosophy, I feel that the way we approach our work is ultimately connected to our philosophy."

To continue the history of over 100 years
For Yamada, who is in a position to convey what his predecessors have accumulated and pass the baton to the next generation, the evolution of the lubricant product is important. "In order to develop something new, we need to add more value to past technologies. For example, things that lead to environmental improvement. From improving the working environment by using ingredients that have less impact on the human body, to reducing the amount used. Reducing waste and improving the global environment. Or specializing in quietness, reducing machine noise and creating a quiet environment. Adding new ideas and development elements to products that have been continued from the past. It is desirable to connect this to something that creates value, and I believe that this is the role of our generation. We aim to move the hearts of our customers and help them improve their environment through lubricant products. By promoting new developments, improvements, and new lubricants added to our lineup, we hope to pass on the ideas and technologies of our predecessors to the future."

It started with an encounter at a bookstore.
This is the book that led me to join Idemitsu Kosan.
"When I started job hunting, I wanted to work for a company whose philosophy I could sympathize with.Products change with the times, so if I could empathize with the company's ideals, I would be able to work in any environment, regardless of the industry. I decided to prioritize the ideals first. Around that time, I picked up a book at a bookstore. At that time, it won the Bookstore Award.
"The Man Called Pirate" (a novel based on the company's founder, Sazo Idemitsu). Then, when I learned about Idemitsu Kosan's philosophy, I felt that it was the company that fit me best. "After joining the company, by chance or by necessity, Yamada was assigned to the lubricant section, which inherited the technology and philosophy from the company's founding.
