Idemitsu Renewable Diesel (IRD)

A Biofuel Produced from Renewable Resources

Renewable Diesel (RD) is a biofuel produced from renewable resources such as used cooking oil and vegetable oils. It is used as an alternative to conventional diesel fuel, mainly for trucks, buses, construction machinery, generators, and ships. Although CO₂ is emitted during combustion, the plants used as raw materials absorb CO₂ as they grow. Therefore, compared with petroleum diesel, the net CO₂ emissions are considered effectively zero—making RD a carbon-neutral fuel.

Key Features of Idemitsu Renewable Diesel (IRD)

Idemitsu Renewable Diesel (IRD) is produced under Idemitsu Kosan’s proprietary quality standards, ensuring consistent product reliability. It is made from waste cooking oil derived from plant sources, contributing to a circular economy through waste reuse and effective resource utilization. As a diesel alternative, IRD achieves over 80% CO₂ reduction in life-cycle assessments and 100% reduction in CO₂ emissions from fuel combustion compared with conventional diesel. Furthermore, switching from diesel to IRD does not require replacement of vehicles or engines, nor the installation of new equipment. Existing vehicles and facilities can continue to be used—allowing for a smooth and low-cost transition to a cleaner fuel.

Meeting the Need for CO₂ Reduction in All Diesel Applications

Idemitsu Kosan supplies IRD as fuel for construction machinery and generators used at construction sites. In collaboration with partner companies, Idemitsu is also conducting demonstration tests using IRD as fuel for passenger buses carrying actual customers. Because large vehicles and construction machinery are often difficult to electrify or convert to hydrogen, IRD offers a practical pathway to decarbonization. Through IRD, Idemitsu responds to CO₂ reduction needs across a wide range of diesel-burning applications.

Toward a Sustainable Society Through the Expansion of Environmentally Friendly Energy

Idemitsu Kosan is actively working to ensure a stable supply of diverse, environmentally friendly energy sources. To promote the wider adoption of IRD, the company is building a robust distribution network that ensures stable procurement and consistent quality, leveraging the Idemitsu Group’s network of authorized distributors to deliver fuel to the “last mile,” including end-use sites. Through the expansion of energy solutions that do not increase CO₂ emissions, Idemitsu Kosan is contributing to the realization of a sustainable and decarbonized society.
