Oyasu Geothermal Co., Ltd.'s Snail Mountain Power Plant (Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture) was the first geothermal power plant to be designated as an important power source development site by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Shunichi Kido), INPEX CORPORATION (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Takayuki Ueda), and Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hirotaka Hamamoto), is constructing a geothermal power plant in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture (name: Katatsumuriyama Power Plant; output: 14,990 kW; scheduled start-up: March 2027): (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hirotaka Hamamoto), has been designated as an "Important Power Development Site" as of March 31, 2023, making it the first geothermal power plant to be so designated.

This designation is made in accordance with the "Regulations for Designation of Important Power Development Sites" (Public Notification of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry No. 31, February 18, 2005).
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry designates sites as important power source development sites for the purpose of building local consensus and facilitating the smooth application of licenses and permits by relevant government ministries and agencies in relation to sites that are considered to be of particular importance for the promotion of power source development by the nation.
The three companies, through Oyasu Geothermal Co., Ltd., have been exploring the possibility of applying this system as one way of contributing to the local community in Yuzawa City, the local government where the power plant is located, and have been working with the city to prepare for the fulfillment of the designated conformity requirements. With the site now designated as a major power development site, the three companies will further advance initiatives for coexistence with the local community by utilizing this designation.
The three companies will continue to actively promote the spread and expansion of renewable energy, contributing to Japan's energy security and realization of a low-carbon society, while also contributing to addressing local issues and revitalizing local communities.
This project is receiving support from the Japan Energy and Resources National Corporation (JEMC) in the form of subsidies for initial surveys and a debt guarantee for the loans taken out for the construction of the power plant.

2. Mechanism of geothermal power generation (double flash method)

地熱発電(ダブルフラッシュ方式)の仕組み

① Extract high-temperature, high-pressure geothermal fluids (steam and hot water) from underground geothermal reservoirs through production wells.

② Separate the extracted geothermal fluid into primary steam and hot water using a steam separator.

③The separated hot water is separated into secondary steam and hot water using a vacuum vaporizer.

④The primary and secondary steam rotates the turbine and generates electricity.
