Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Shunichi Kito, hereinafter referred to as “Idemitsu Kosan”) and J-Oil Mills Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Tatsuya Sato, hereinafter “J-Oil Mills”) ) have agreed to jointly consider building a biomass business, including SAF production using bio-based raw materials, plastic recycling, and the use of biochemicals, in order to realize a circular economy, and signed a memorandum of understanding on January 31, 2023. It has been concluded.

There is a growing social demand for a stable supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a concrete measure to reduce CO2 emissions in the aviation industry. SAF is manufactured from non-fossil-derived raw materials, but with multiple technological processes and raw materials available, one of the challenges is securing raw materials that have little competition with edible crops.

In addition, in recent years, the importance of promoting plastic Resources circulation has become even more important in response to the marine plastic waste problem and climate change issues, and efforts to reduce plastic usage and plastic waste in the food industry are accelerating.

Through this agreement, the two companies will build a SAF manufacturing and supply chain by securing plant raw materials through sustainable planting of non-edible oil raw material trees that do not compete with food and utilizing oil extraction know-how, and will also expand the amount of CO2 fixed through the planting. We will consider building a biomass business by leveraging our respective businesses, assets and knowledge, such as recycling used plastics and the use of bio-chemical products using bio-naphtha in packaging materials.

We are working on provide for society of environmentally friendly low-carbon energy, Resources saving, and recycling solutions. As part of this, we are planning to build a green supply chain for biomass-derived fuels and chemicals such as SAF, biodiesel, and biochemicals by 2030.

Furthermore, we have positioned "reducing environmental impact" as one of materiality (key challenges), and aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% (Scope 1, 2) compared to fiscal 2013 by fiscal 2030, and achieve zero carbon emissions by fiscal 2050. I'm holding neutral.
