Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Head office: Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President and CEO: Mamoru Hatazawa), TOSHIBA CORPORATION (Head office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Nobuaki Kurumatani), Toyo Engineering Corporation (Head office: Narashino City, Chiba Prefecture; President and CEO: Haruo Nagamatsu), Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shunichi Kito), All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yuji Hirako), and Japan CCS Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: TOSHIBA CORPORATION Nakajima) have announced that they have completed the development of a carbon dioxide (CO 2) into carbon monoxide (CO) *1 P2C using *2 CO from exhaust gases, etc., during the process 2 "Sustainable Jet Fuel (SAF)" *3 The two companies agreed to begin exploring a carbon recycling business model that would reuse carbon dioxide in the new carbon dioxide emission reduction facility (CO2) that will be used in the city of Yokohama.

Going forward, we will leverage the knowledge, technology, plant equipment, etc. of each company to jointly identify issues in the supply chain that supplies SAF and consider future business models. Specifically, the SAF will be manufactured using renewable energy and hydrogen, using CO2 separated and recovered from exhaust gas from industrial facilities, and will be integrated throughout the supply chain from upstream to downstream until the flight. We will consider it.

In Japan, NDC for the Paris Agreement *4 CO 2 To achieve our emission reduction targets, 2 Environmental innovations such as separation and storage of CO2, Resources recovery, use of renewable energy as the main source of electricity, expansion of hydrogen use, and decarbonization of fuels are expected. In the aviation industry, ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) has set CO2 offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation (CORSIA). 2 Emission reduction targets have been set, and there is a strong demand for stable production and supply of SAF in order to operate aircraft using SAF, which is one of the effective reduction methods. 2 The P2C process, which has the ability to reduce emissions, 2 It is expected to become a next-generation technology for producing SAF using this as a raw material.

Each company will jointly consider future business models for the SAF supply chain with the aim of realizing a sustainable society.

  2. P2C: CCU/Power to Chemicals (P2C), a carbon recycling technology, is a technology that uses renewable energy and renewable hydrogen to reuse CO 2 into valuable materials with high environmental value, reducing CO 2 emissions. It will also greatly contribute to the spread and expansion of renewable energy.
  3. SAF: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Jet fuel manufactured from sustainable sources with low CO2 emissions during the process from raw material production and collection to combustion)
  4. Nationally Determined Contribution: Nationally determined greenhouse gas reduction goals and mitigation efforts to achieve them. Japan submitted it to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat in March 2020.
