Advanced Geochemical Technologies improve exploration success rates

Geochemical technology is one of our core strengths supporting exploration activities. This science-based approach enables us to understand how oil and gas are formed, where they come from, and how they migrate underground over time. Oil and gas are generated as organic matter undergoes thermal maturation and cracking deep beneath the subsurface, and subsequently migrate and accumulate in geological traps.
At Idemitsu, we have developed proprietary analytical and evaluation techniques that allow us to identify the source rocks and migration pathways of oil and gas with high precision. This is achieved through the analysis of biomarkers—trace compounds derived from ancient organisms found in crude oil—and diamondoids, which are formed under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. To further enhance the accuracy of natural gas origin assessment, we are conducting joint research with the Institute of Science Tokyo using state of the art intra-molecular isotope analysis methods.
Idemitsu was also among the early adopters of basin modeling technology, which digitally simulates the generation, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons underground. We have contributed to the development of software now used around the world. By integrating these advanced geochemical technologies, Idemitsu continues to improve exploration success rates and drive more efficient, sustainable resource development.
