Thermal power generation
Natural gas-fired power generation is a method of generating electricity that utilizes energy produced by burning fossil fuels. We supply electricity by operating natural gas-fired power plants using natural gas, which has a lower environmental impact than oil or coal, as well as by-product gas and residual oil generated during the oil refining process at our Group Refinery. We also invest in natural gas-fired power plants in North America with the aim of acquiring new knowledge and creating business opportunities.
Initiatives in Japan
Ougishima Power Station (Ohgishima Power Co., Ltd.)
This is a large-scale, highly efficient natural gas-fired power plant that utilizes the site of our former crude oil storage facility. It is operated by Ohgishima Power Co., Ltd. Electricity is supplied by a gas turbine combined cycle *1, which has excellent energy-saving properties.
-
1. Gas turbine combined cycle: In normal gas turbine power generation, hot exhaust gas that is no longer needed after generating electricity from the gas turbine is discharged into the atmosphere. In combined cycle power generation, in addition to generating electricity from the gas turbine, heat from the discharged hot exhaust gas is recovered to drive a steam turbine to generate electricity.

Mizue Power Plant (TOA Oil Co., Ltd.)
Located on the premises of the Keihin Refinery TOA Oil Co., Ltd., Ltd., a subsidiary of our Refinery, the plant generates electricity using by-product gas and residual oil generated during the oil refining process at the refinery as raw materials. In optimal coordination with Refinery, the plant generates electricity efficiently through a highly energy-efficient cogeneration system *2, contributing to a stable supply of electricity. In addition, some of the electricity and steam generated is also used for oil refining at the Refinery.

Initiatives overseas
Investment in natural gas-fired power plants (USA)
Our company is participating in a natural gas-fired power plant business in the United States with the aim of acquiring knowledge about power plant operations and market transactions and contributing to our domestic business. The United States is an area that Japan is using as a reference for power market reform, and we are currently investing in two natural gas-fired power plants.
