Thermal power generation

Natural gas-fired power generation is a power generation method that uses energy from the combustion of fossil fuels. We supply electricity by operating natural gas-fired power plants using natural gas, which has a lower environmental impact than oil and coal, as well as by-product gas and residual oil generated in the oil refining process at Refinery. We are also investing in natural gas-fired power plants in North America with the aim of acquiring new knowledge and creating business opportunities.

Initiatives in Japan

Ogishima Power Station (Ohgishima Power Co., Ltd.)

This is a large, highly efficient natural gas-fired power plant that utilizes the site of our company's crude oil storage facility. It is operated by Ohgishima Power Co., Ltd., which was jointly established by our company and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. Electricity is supplied using a gas turbine combined cycle *1, which has excellent energy efficiency.

  • Gas turbine combined cycle: In normal gas turbine power generation, the high-temperature exhaust gas that is no longer needed after the gas turbine drives the power is released into the atmosphere. In combined cycle power generation, in addition to gas turbine power generation, the heat from the emitted high-temperature exhaust gas is recovered to drive a steam turbine to generate power.

Unit 3 407,000 kW (Start of operation: February 2016)

Mizue Power Plant (TOA Oil Co., Ltd.)

The facility is located on the grounds of TOA Oil Co., Ltd. 's Keihin Refinery, a subsidiary of the Company, and generates electricity using byproduct gas and residual oil generated during the Refinery 's oil refining process. While working in optimal cooperation with Refinery, we are contributing to the stable supply of electricity by generating highly efficient power using a highly energy-efficient cogeneration system *2. In addition, some of the electricity and steam are used for oil refining at the same Refinery.

  • Cogeneration system: A system that recovers, uses, and supplies heat obtained through power generation without wasting it.

Initiatives overseas

Investment in natural gas-fired power plants (USA)

Our company is participating in a natural gas-fired power plant business in the United States with the aim of acquiring knowledge about power plant operations and market transactions and contributing to our domestic business. The United States is an area that Japan is using as a reference for power market reform, and we are currently investing in two natural gas-fired power plants.
