Today, the energy surroundings are not stable, rather upheavals in the surroundings are caused by global warming, economic development of emergent nations and dramatic fluctuations in the price of resources due to investment money games. While in addition to domestic environmental issues, the demand for petroleum is decreasing due to factors such as increased awareness of the need for energy conservation, the declining birthrate and the aging society, it is, nevertheless, predicted that almost 40% of the energy supply will still be petroleum-based in the year 2030,effectively ranking petroleum as an extremely important source of energy, even when viewed in the long term. Meanwhile, taking the global view, energy, food and the environment remain important global issues. Against this background, I believe that society is also closely looking at how we tackle these various issues, or, in other words, how we establish a recycling-oriented society.
Mindful of these issues, we at Idemitsu are engaged with "energy," "food" and "the environment" as the keywords in initiatives aimed at addressing global warming as well as other environmental issues, at the same time as making optimum use of our management resources to secure and realize stable supply of energy.
With stable supply to our domestic customers in our petroleum and petrochemical businesses as the base, we are undertaking enhancement of our international competitiveness in pursuit of efficiency in our manufacturing, distribution and sales processes. Additionally, in Asia, a region where demand for energy is growing, we are expanding our overseas business targeting the entire region.
On the resource business front, we are reinforcing our oil exploration and production, coal mining and uranium businesses to meet growing demands for energy in the medium-and long-term. Moreover, we are also advancing our undertakings in renewable forms of energy with low environmental impact in the fields of business such as geothermal resources, wind power and bio-fuels.
Furthermore, we are also making advances in the areas of business such as environmentally-oriented electronic materials and agricultural bio-technology by using our own unique technology.
Since its foundation in 1911, Idemitsu has been engaged in "people-centered" business with the concept of "respect for human beings" as its guiding principle of management. By this, we mean that we contribute to society through business and, furthermore, that the practice of our business enables each and every one of us to grow into an individual who is trusted and respected by the community. It is especially in the changing world of today that the Idemitsu Group looks back to "respect for human beings," and continues its efforts to build a recycling-oriented society.
